Our Book - Introduction

INTRODUCTION TO THE HIDDEN ARTISTS OF BARNSLEY BOOK

This publication has been created as part of Barnsley Art on Your Doorstep’s Hidden Art project 2012-2015.

A series of wonderful artists emerged from Barnsley in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries amidst industrial and associated social changes which did so much to transform the area and its communities. Barnsley Art on Your Doorstep worked with local communities and partners to explore the past artists’ lives, showcase their work and engage people with what is a rich and inspiring artistic heritage that had been hidden. Volunteers and guest writers have undertaken the research about the artists, their families, their work and their links to the Borough.

The project was enabled by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and by support from Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The publication of the book was associated with an exhibition of the work of 28 of these artists at the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley between 7th June and 30th August 2014. Barnsley Art on Your Doorstep acknowledges the support of the Trustees of the Cooper Gallery and its Friends and staff.

As the project progressed, Barnsley Art on Your Doorstep discovered more and more artists born in Barnsley or strongly connected with the area. There are several artists still to be researched.

Peter Brook, Alan Wade and David Bacon do not have articles in this publication but their work was displayed in the exhibition. Paintings by Frank Milner were donated to Barnsley Art on Your Doorstep by the Porterbrook Gallery but could not be included in the exhibition. However, these paintings are now on long term loan to Barnsley Hospice. Time did not allow us to include the following artists at all:

Dorothy Christina Patience Arnold (1901-1992)

Reg Gosling

Edwin Haigh (1869-1941)

James Hazlett (Haslet) died 1882

E. Harold Jones (1877-1911)

Roy Kearsley (active 1957-1975)

Madeleine Moore (née De Mirimonde) born 1869

Eric Warhurst Platt (1915-2013)

Throughout the period of our research into the artists we valued greatly the support and information from Paul Stebbing (Archives and Local Studies Manager at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council) and his staff, especially Gillian Nixon. Without them, we would not have been able to complete our research and produce our Hidden Artists Of Barnsley Book.
